Let me tell you that there exists an effortless way to become a funnier individual, than you already are. The very first thing we should do is understand why we find something amusing, at least the way psychologists think it is. Everytime we hear something that we haven’t known of before, the brain creates a brand new ”path”, from one neuron to the other one.

That path is what we call a synapse and it works like this:
If we, let’s say think about food, and we remember peaches are food, then the brain produces a connection (synapse, that gets more massive) between the neurons that store the data we have on food and the ones with this fruit. This actually means, that the next time you think of food, you will most likely think of apples. You're probably thinking, what does that have to do with me getting funnier? But, it's pretty much all about it, it's actually the way humor works.

Everything starts with you hearing a plain and common story. Stand-up comedians call this a setup. After that, you’re expected to think about the given story in a certain way. And so, our brain will now make a path which will go from the setup to it's suitable punch-line. The person who told you the story will most likely not tell you the same punch-line, but a totally different one, which will lead to you laughing about it. In case you have not understood this, it's ok just read the following example.

The Setup:
What is the most satisfying thing next to being shot at and missed?
The Punch-line:
An income tax refund.

How different was the punch-line you thought of? Most likely, you thought it was either Bosnian, Serbian or Croatian driving it, and not the cops. During the setup our brain was forced to think this way. Note that, as I said the punch-line was indeed different as I said it would be. Be sure to remember this, as this is the main principle of humor.

You should create the best possible setup, as it's really important. The greatest comedians will usually tell you a setup which will make you think of a number of different possible punch-lines. The more you think your punch-line is the most fitting one, the more will the actually punch-line make you laugh. In case you have already heard the joke, it will probably not be as funny, simply because your brain knows the punch-line, therefore it won't create any new routes.

This should be handy if you want to think of some new pranks. When a man tells something that everyone thinks about in the same way, but you figure out an unexpected way to understand it. Now, if you tell this to others, it should be very funny.
